In layman terms, the suspension is something that keeps an object suspended in the air. So if you are sleeping in a hammock, you would be suspended from the ground and protected from the vibrations and shock of the ground. The reason why cars employ this extensive system is pretty clear. We want the friction and shock of the ground to be minimized.

To explain it better, the spring mechanism of the modern suspension system pushes the wheel to the ground whenever it is airborne. So when your car hits the speed bump, it gets off the ground for a moment, and the suspension system pushes it back to the ground in order to re-establish the connection with the road. Similarly, when you take a sharp turn, the inside wheels are lifted off the ground. In the absence of the suspension system, your car would topple over. The modern car suspension system is smartly designed with every wheel and axle being independently suspended. This means if one of the wheels is off the ground, the other three will stay put. This is known as the independent suspension.
If each wheel did not have their own suspension system, then when one wheel was raised, the other wheel on the same side would also rise which can lead the car to flip over. This is known as the dependent car suspension system.

Though not commonly used in newer vehicles, you may find this design in off-road cars or older vehicles. This system, known as the beam axle design has two different axles; live and dead.
